It’s a common theory that things come in threes. Usually, these are bad things- but not when Nintendo is involved. After the great success of the Mini NES, and with Mini SNES having sold all pre-orders everywhere, a Mini N64 is pretty much a sure thing now. Either that, or Nintendo have protected their property from copycats.
On July 18, 2017, Nintendo filed a few patents in Europe. One of which, was for an N64 controller. Given their track record, they got the patents sorted on the NES and SNES controllers prior to the announcements of the other baby consoles.
As per the image from the patent they’ve filed, nothing as of yet has been announced from Nintendo. Given this, the rumor mill is in full swing.
We can only speculate as to the games that the Mini N64 would boast. I think we can all agree, though, that Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will make the cut. Given this was one of the first consoles that could show off 3D technology, there are so many games that could get squeezed into the grey box of perfection.
Before you even think it, it’s unlikely that that best shooters of all time will be on it. Most people will agree, that Goldeneye 007 on the N64 is one of the finest shooters ever made. However, since Microsoft acquired Rare, and the IP that goes with it, we probably won’t see it again. Even with the Xbox One’s Rare Replay, it was missing due to Microsoft’s grip on the rights.
Hopefully we’ll get some more information soon, but in the meantime, let us know in the comments what games you’d like to see on the N64 Mini.
