Let’s be honest. Any horror film that starts by giving viewers the definition for “goatman” quickly sets some high expectations for what is about to take place. As the intro for the short horror film Trust Me begins and provides this very definition, followed by a disturbingly cryptic scene, it is clear that something unsettling is about to go down. And, indeed it does.
Happy couple Becca (Alexandra Bayless) and Jim (Luke Cook) venture into the woods for a romantic hike, only to come across something foul-smelling shrouded in a flannel blanket. Not sticking around to check it out, they head back to the cabin, but something has followed them home.
As one can assume by the title, an ongoing theme throughout Trust Me is not knowing if we can trust what we are seeing, or assuming to be true. Director Nate Ruegger does remarkably well at ratcheting up the horror at a great pace, and never letting the intensity dip. It is obvious that any budget constraints were not an issue, as the effects were simple, yet highly effective, and quality production values made it feel richer.
The horror genre has no shortage of films showing the mythical and supernatural dangers that await us in the woods. Although Trust Me falls under that sub-genre, the film has no issues holding its own and standing out in the crowd. It also leaves you wanting more goatman, which is probably not a phrase said too often. Luckily, the filmmakers are currently working on a feature film for Trust Me, and it can’t come soon enough.
Trust Me was featured at the 2019 FEARnyc Horror Film Festival. The event started on October 24 and goes until October 31. To find out more about the short film, including screenings, check out the official website.
