Utterly repulsive and yet oddly addictive to collect, Garbage Pail Kids trading cards have long held a special plate in my heart dating all the way back to my childhood. Published by Topps as a parody of the immensely popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls of the ’80s, the cards are very well-known for their unique illustrations and gross-out humor. At the time, the cards became a hit, giving the series a cult following and spawning a movie, animated series, and several relaunches of the trading cards over the years.
Soon, Garbage Pail Kids fans can add another awesome must-have collectible to the collection, as the repulsive little fellows are getting their own Monopoly edition to honor their 35th anniversary. On Facebook, Garbage Pail Kids artist Joe Simko revealed the box art for the game, and just from the box alone, it’s clear that this version of Monopoly will be the most disgusting edition of the classic board game yet. Of course, the product is officially licensed and even comes complete with “GPK style tokens.” Take my money now!
Garbage Pail Kids trading cards were first released by Topps in 1985. Some of the more memorable classic characters include Adam Bomb (with a mushroom cloud for a head), Dead Ted (who’s almost completely rotten as he rises from the grave), Brainy Janey (whose brains can be seen on the outside of her skull), and Itchy Richie (a young boy covered completely with spiders). The illustrations were always crude and visibly unsettling for many who saw them, but for those of us who enjoyed them, the pictures were oddly beautiful.
There’s no word yet on exactly when the Garbage Pail Kids version of Monopoly will be released, but according to Simko, the game is “coming soon.” You can take a look at the box art reveal from Simko below!
