‘The Westies’ Episode 6 Recap & Review: Bridget Makes a Risky Choice

In The Westies, the leadership of the Italian and Irish mobs both recognize the dangers of entering the drug trade. In the latest episode, “Rad Tad,” members of both sides defy their leadership, some on an ongoing basis, lured by big money.

Greed is a powerful sin, whether it is financially motivated, driven by revenge, or for another reason. It has raised the stakes even higher, and disaster is looming.

Bridget Goes Against the IRA in The Westies Episode 6

The Irish mafia has a new Portuguese drug connection and is living the good life, enjoying some money for a change. Jimmy (Tom Brittney) shares the wealth with his men, and things are finally looking up. That all changes, however, when a man is introduced to Jimmy who wants to start another partnership to satisfy his rich friends.

While he doesn’t seem exactly trustworthy, there is a lot of money at stake, and they agree to move ahead. As it turns out, it wasn’t the best decision.

Jimmy finds himself a bit short on cash to buy more product, but Eamon Sweeney (J.K. Simmons) refuses to lend him any more, so he takes out a risky loan. After negotiating with his new supplier, he secures what he needs to sell to the new potential partner. This series of events is exactly the kind of thing Jimmy was warned about. But as Eamon said, he has to learn how to get things done.

However, the new potential partner was a setup; the man owed the Italians a large sum of money, so he did them a favor. Now, with the Italians warning off the Portuguese, Jimmy is backed into a corner with no options to do business except, of course, with Gotti (Hamish Allan-Headley).

The chaos surrounding both Bridget (Sarah Bolger) and Glenn Keenan (Titus Welliver) continues to deepen. Bridget joined the IRA in Hell’s Kitchen and is torn between doing the right thing for the Irish mafia and seeking her own revenge. The car-bomb plan to kill the man responsible for her parents’ deaths was always risky, but when they are set up and ready to detonate, the street fills with protesters. She ultimately doesn’t go through with it, walking away rather than kill innocents.

It was the right choice, but it’s going to cost her dearly in the IRA, especially with Brendan Cahill (Allen Leech). While he may have feelings for Bridget, he will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

Several Characters in The Westies Are Heading for Disaster

After being beaten to a pulp by Eamon and his men in Episode 5, Keenan, licking his wounds, returns to the FBI with a new plan, this time to turn Dukey Sullivan (Patrick Garrow). He gets a woman Dukey assaulted to sign an affidavit detailing what he did to her. Keenan is then tasked with picking him up and arresting him.

However, Keenan, the good cop, gives way to the side of him that wants payback and revenge. He puts Dukey down. The last image we see is Keenan beating him as he lies on the ground. It doesn’t look like Dukey is going to survive Keenan’s wrath. If he dies, that puts Keenan in trouble all over again.

In the end, Jimmy is forced to make a deal with Gotti, and both men conduct business behind their bosses’ backs. It is a sure-fire recipe for disaster. To seal the deal, Gotti wants the sketchy guy he used to set them up killed. He just so happens to have him waiting at the meeting place.

While Jimmy is reluctant, Mickey Flanagan (Stanley Morgan) is more than ready and shoots him dead, sealing their deal. Both men have a secret deal behind the bosses’ backs… what could go wrong?

Titus Welliver continues to shine the brightest on the show, making Keenan both loathsome and tragic. It’s sad to watch him dig himself deeper into a hole when he has ample opportunities to take a different path. The episode takes both sides and keeps pushing them down slippery slopes.

While the pacing can be an issue at times, The Westies Episode 6 moved quickly and efficiently through many storylines. It gave us a clear, hard look at the many characters headed toward tragic ends.
