Not since Capcom’s 1999’s release of Dino Crisis have I felt the anxiety of being chased by frickin’ dinosaurs! Breaking Dimensions and Polygon Dust have made a fan out of this writer with their interpretation of what its like to be stalked by a dinosaur. Oakwood is refreshing and a nice change of pace from the usual horror survival themes.
Your adventure starts off in an abandoned camp ground looking for your friends. As you explore, things go downhill pretty fast. Armed with only your trusted flashlight and your wits, the obstacles are hungry and constantly on the prowl. As you explore, there are collectibles to be had and clues to what happened to the camp ground as you find your way out.

The developer’s use of Unity has made Oakwood very creative and enriched with detail. The controls feel good and straightforward with hardly any learning curve, which is good because you need to learn to run and hide rather quickly. The atmospheric music adds to the tension as you duck and cover your way out of the gaping maws. I highly recommend using a pair of headphones to add to the experience.
My first playthrough, I got to a point where my anxiety had me so on edge that I just ran through. It was pretty dark, and that was with the flashlight on. By no means is that a bad thing, but the flashlight could be a tad brighter. Or, I might just be a wuss in my old age, but I guarantee that you will jump.

Breaking Dimensions and Polygon Dust has me wanting more from Oakwood! Perhaps some DLC is in the future? Maybe the ability to call in an airstrike on those prehistoric beasts? All kidding a side, even though the game was a short experience, the pacing of it all was excellent. Also, the price of admission is well worth it. As of now, Oakwood is available on Steam for $4.49 USD until December 11th. The regular price for the game is just $4.99 USD.
