‘The Matrix 4’ with Keanu Reeves is Officially a Go

Warner Bros.

The Matrix 4 is now definitely happening, as Variety reports the sequel is now in active development. Lana Wachowski is on board to write and direct the fourth installment, which will continue the storyline established in the first three movies. Alexsandar Hemon and David Mitchell are also contributing to the script. Better yet, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are both attached to the project to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.

The project comes from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. WB Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich further confirmed the news in an official statement. “We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” Emmerich says. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

For those of us suffering from reboot fatigue, this is obviously fantastic news. There have been rumors for years of another Matrix movie, and given Hollywood’s love for remakes, a Matrix reboot was a definite possibility. It would appear most fans would rather see an official follow-up to the original trilogy rather than trying to recreate the complex story with an entirely new cast of characters. Reboots and remakes aren’t always bad, but The Matrix certainly feels like one which probably shouldn’t happen.

This is also great news for big fans of Keanu Reeves. Neo is going to be just one of multiple fan favorite characters the actor will soon be returning to. The upcoming sequel Bill & Ted Face the Music will also give him the chance to once again play Ted Logan from the Bill & Ted movies, which is perhaps his most appreciated role next to Neo and, of course, John Wick.

No word yet on a release date for The Matrix 4, but production is reportedly set to begin in early 2020. Stay tuned for updates which should be forthcoming.
