It would be an understatement to say that Robert Pattinson’s casting in Matt Reeves’ The Batman has brought about mixed feelings from fans. Some are very happy to see Pattinson in the role, crediting his excellent performances across a variety of dramatic roles in different films. Others have a more difficult time getting past the actor’s association with The Twilight Saga, struggling to picture him as anything other than Edward Cullen.
Now, it’s clear which side former Batman actor Christian Bale stands on.
Speaking in a new interview with Variety to promote his new film Ford v Ferrari, Bale was asked directly about his opinion on Pattinson getting cast as the next Dark Knight in The Batman. “Good choice! He’s interesting,” Bale said of the casting, with his co-star Matt Damon also in complete agreement. Additionally, Bale had some words of wisdom to pass along to Pattinson, which is also what he told Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice actor Ben Affleck when he first took on the role. “Just be able to pee by yourself. You don’t feel like a superhero when you aren’t able to piss by yourself,” Bale says.
Previously, Bale played Batman in a trilogy of movies directed by Christopher Nolan: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. He then passed on the cape to Affleck for the character’s inclusion in the DCEU, although Affleck has since walked away from the role. Pattinson is the only actor confirmed to appear in The Batman as of now. What’s also known is that the movie will not be connected to the DCEU or Joker, presenting a standalone story about a younger version of the Dark Knight.
The Batman is set to premiere in theaters on June 25, 2021.
