As fans of Full Moon Features have probably heard, the film company is launching their Deadly Ten anthology this month. The first title to be released is Weedjies! Halloweed Night, which serves as a fun throwback to old-school creature features.
Weedjies! follows three young women, Madison (Brett Hargrave), Dallas (Victoria Strange), and Frankie (Yo Ying ), and their associate, Claude (Johnny Lee), as they throw a massive Vegas-style Halloween party, complete with 420 party favors. When the party gets the attention of Madam Haze (Denise Milfort), she pays them a visit with her mystical Weed-G-Board (similar to the Ouija board). After the hosts sit to play, they unwittingly release a group of monstrous fiends called Weedjies who are out for the blood of party-goers. They must destroy the creatures by midnight before getting trapped in the board themselves.
Fans of Charles Band films and ’80s horror cult classics such as Ghoulies should appreciate the puppets and practical effects. The FX upped the zaniness and overall campy fun in a way that CGI would not have provided. Fans will also enjoy nods to classic Full Moon films as party-goers arrive in character costumes. We even get treated to the Weedjies coming face-to-face with Blade and Tunneler, which was a personal highlight of the film.
Director Danny Draven kept things bright and colorful, making it lighthearted while adding fantasy and whimsy on top of the creature horror. The Vegas setting only adds to this, letting the monsters to explore a playground not usually seen in horror films, while allowing for some unique celebrity cameos. All of this pairs nicely with the intentionally cheesy script and characters, as well as the pot theme.
The film may not hit for all audiences seeing as how it’s pretty comedic and outlandish. But for Full Moon fans looking for a high-spirited creature feature, Weedjies! Halloweed Night will hit the spot. Overall, it is an absurdly entertaining kick-off for the Deadly Ten film series.
Full Moon will premiere Weedjies! Halloweed Night on October 21st, exclusively on the Full Moon Features Channel and App, and Full Moon’s Amazon Prime channel.
