Frightmare City is a horror comic series, with each issue telling a different tale taking place in a city going to hell. Creator and writer AC Turner got the idea for the stories from a pamphlet distributed by the NYPD long ago. On the website, it explains that the pamphlet featured a “Hooded Death’s Head warned readers to ‘Stay away from New York’ as authorities grappled with uncontrollable violence that left the city teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.” This inspired Turner to write about an alternate version of New York City; one that comes with nightmarish, and even supernatural, twists.

While each issue features a self-contained story, they flow from one to the next with a clear cohesiveness. You begin to feel as if you’re wandering the city, peeking into windows and hiding behind bushes to catch glimpses of the lives around you. We are introduced to a city submerged in madness, whether the citizens realize it or not.

Turner has assembled a talented team of artists to pencil and ink the issues, greatly complimenting the well-written tales of horror. In the same vein as Creepshow and Tales of the Crypt, those deserving of punishment get their comeuppance in satisfyingly gruesome ways. There are some bone-chilling moments in each issue, with Issue #2 featuring a truly hellish character straight out of a nightmare. Overall, Frightmare City is an impressively polished indie comic that does not go light on the scares.

If you are a fan of creepy comics, it is absolutely worth the time to binge through the available issues. Per Turner, a new story will be released online at the end of every month for the next year. Once finished, they will be printed in a trade paperback.
