“I have to return some videotapes.” Well, not so fast.

The 2000 film American Psycho, directed by Mary Harron, and starring Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Samantha Mathis, and Chloë Sevigny will be getting the Unrated 4k Ultra HD/Blu-Ray/Digital Copy Steelbook treatment from Lionsgate on October 5th.

The movie, based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, has turned into quite a cult classic, reflecting the depraved 1980s yuppie lifestyle through a satirical lens. Bale stars as Patrick Bateman, an egotistical and depraved Wall Street cretin by day, journeying to bars, clubs, and fancy restaurants. He transforms into a chainsaw-wielding, axe-swinging, psychopath by night.

The vanity and psychosis inside this arthouse production have not only maintained relevance in film studies, but left impressionable scenes burned into the brains of the audience. If you are a fan of those scenes and this film, this 2-disc set will be money well spent.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of this gem. The packaging alone is a work of art. The outer plastic sleeve carries brilliant artwork, recreating an iconic scene from the film’s opening. Some of those scenes I mentioned earlier are burned and etched into the inner sleeves and walls of the Steelbook package. This includes the infamous order to “Feed Me A Stray Kitten” and a glossy opaque image of a very familiar axe. Another bit of fun is a nod to one of American Psycho’s most talked about scenes – the infamous business card showdown – where the characters are essentially comparing phalli.

But that’s not all! The special features provided here are to kill for, including commentaries, deleted scenes and a super interesting featurette. The whole package itself is a superbly constructed homage to the disturbing, but memorable, film within.

“Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh, my God. It even has a watermark.”

I cannot recommend this product enough. This is a great package set, and will make a great gift this coming holiday season. American Psycho is a raw and bleak reflection of a society that values all of the wrong things. But I say crank up the Huey Lewis and the News and bask in the irony that this beautiful presentation is worth every penny.

American Psycho Unrated Steelbook Edition is available for pre-order now, with a release date of Oct. 5th, 2021.
