While there haven’t been any updates in a while on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2, director André Øvredal wants fans to know that the planned sequel is still “alive.”

Per IGN, Øvredal recently addressed the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark sequel while promoting his next movie, the vampire film The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The director’s response was quite hopeful, confirming that the screenplay is still getting written, though progress was paused when the writers’ strike began. Øvredal then notes how he’s otherwise been pretty busy due to the pandemic and his new movie, but it seems like production won’t be too far away after the strike ends.

“We have a story. We have a script. We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year,” Øvredal explained. “The process obviously stopped with the strike — but it’s alive, for sure. COVID and then [The Last Voyage of the Demeter] eating up two years of my life certainly put a dent in the progress.”

Directed by Øvredal and released in 2019, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is based on the original book series by writer Alvin Schwartz and illustrator Stephen Gammell. The screenplay was penned by Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman, with a story by Guillermo del Toro, Patrick Melton, and Marcus Dunstan. The film stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur, Natalie Ganzhorn, Austin Abrams, and Dean Norris.

For now, fans can revisit the original film due to its availability on streaming. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark can currently be streamed for free on the free streaming platforms FreeVee and Pluto TV. It’s also currently available on Prime Video and Hulu.
