Following the hit horror films Barbarian and Weapons, director Zach Cregger is taking on the Resident Evil reboot. A new trailer debuted on the first day of San Diego Comic-Con 2026, and it looks just as terrifying as we hoped.
Cregger’s Resident Evil is the second movie reboot of the iconic horror video game franchise, following 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The timeline is set during the events of the second game, Resident Evil 2, which launched in 1998. The story takes place a couple of months after the first game. The game was remade in 2019 and received rave reviews. Needless to say, Cregger has big RE shoes to fill.
The upcoming film will follow a medical courier named Bryan (Austin Abrams) on a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. Unfortunately, the outbreak is already in full swing, turning it into a fight for survival. Austin Abrams isn’t new to working with Zach Cregger; he previously played James in 2025’s Weapons. He brought a lot of comic relief as a desperate drug addict, and the trailer hints that he will bring that same humor.
Cregger co-wrote the film with Shay Hatten, who previously wrote John Wick: Chapter 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, and the spin-off Ballerina. He has also worked in zombie horror, having written Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and the prequel Army of Thieves.
In addition to Abrams, the film also stars Zach Cherry (Severance, Fallout) as Dave, Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country, Mercy) as Pauline, and Paul Walter Hauser (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Naked Gun) as Carl. All three are Umbrella scientists.

The Resident Evil reboot certainly has a lot of promise, despite Johannes Roberts’ 2021 reboot flopping at the box office and with critics. The film might just be what the franchise needs to get back on track.
Resident Evil is scheduled to be released on September 18, 2026.
