Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot is coming to movie theaters this month. Filmgoers who see the new flick at Regal theaters will have a chance to pick up a popcorn container that’s among the strangest yet for a movie release, but it is rather fitting.
In Resident Evil, Austin Abrams plays a medical courier tasked with transporting a delivery to Raccoon City Hospital. When he gets to the city, he discovers that he has happened to arrive right at the start of a viral outbreak with zombies and other mutated creatures wreaking havoc. As seen in the trailers, he is carrying an organ transplant bag that he’s determined to get to its recipient.
On social media, the Regal theater chain shared an image unveiling the first look at their Resident Evil popcorn container. It is in the form of a green bag stylized to look like the one Abrams brandishes in the film. While the image mixes a heart in with the popcorn for visual effect, a disclaimer notes, “Comes with a large popcorn (heart not included).” Regal also stated in the caption, “Need a transplant? We recommend this popcorn bag.”

Zach Cregger directed the film and co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten. Along with Abrams, Resident Evil also stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson.
The reboot is not connected to the original Resident Evil movie series directed by Paul W. S. Anderson or Johannes Roberts’ 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Cregger’s version focuses on original characters not featured in any of the video games, but it’s still meant to feel like playing a Resident Evil title.

“Resident Evil is a survival horror, not a survival action. He’s not a badass going around and karate kicking these zombies. It’s more intense, grounded dread, tone, and atmosphere,” Cregger told Deadline about the vibe. “One of the things those games do so well is that they lay out such a distinct and effective atmosphere. And so, I feel like to me, what makes this a real love letter to those games is I’m trying to replicate that experience of feeling dread and tension.”
Resident Evil premieres in movie theaters on Sept. 18, 2026.
