The first two episodes of MGM+’s The Institute premiered on July 13, 2025, and quickly rose to the top spot on the platform as viewers tuned in. The show is based on Stephen King’s 2019 novel of the same name. Following Season 1’s success, the show was renewed in August 2025. The highly anticipated second season is set to premiere on November 8.

Season 1 of The Institute centers on Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman), a teenage boy with supernatural powers who is abducted by an unknown organization. When he wakes up in a secure facility, he encounters other children with special abilities that the organization aims to exploit in dangerous ways.

Time is critical because most of the institute’s young inmates do not survive long. Together with ex-police officer Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes), they try to escape and dismantle the program.

The Institute Season 2 will expand on the novel and follow the explosive Season 1 finale. The trailer shows the surviving group continuing their fight while it expands what we know about the organization.

The official Season 2 logline reads, “In the wake of their climactic escape from Dennison, Luke and his friends search for a way to end the Institute for good. Meanwhile, The Director enlists a new ally, tech billionaire Nolan Reeves, to help him rebuild, and Sigsby’s life as a fugitive pushes her to seek a way back ‘in.'”
