One of the first films I ever rented, after reading about it in Fangoria, was a goofy little horror movie called Frankenhooker. Who would have thought it would still be discussed and adored 36 years later? Synapse has delivered the Frank Henenlotter classic to 4K, and it really hit the mark.

After a freak accident claims the life of his beloved fiancée, Elizabeth, medical student Jeffrey Franken (James Lorinz) becomes obsessed with bringing her back to life. Drawing on his questionable scientific knowledge, Jeffrey devises a bizarre plan to assemble a new body from the finest parts available, turning to the streets of New York City in search of suitable replacements.

Armed with a batch of super-powered crack that makes unsuspecting prostitutes explode, Jeffrey finds himself with plenty of spare parts to work with. But when his resurrected creation hits the streets, his dream of eternal love becomes a hilariously gory nightmare.

Frankenhooker has endured as a beloved cult horror comedy for a few reasons. One reason is that Frank Henenlotter was at his absolute best during this time. He drew on all his experience, sense of humor, and sense of the macabre to deliver something no one had ever seen before.

Patty Mullen embraced the character, delivering a nuanced performance that truly connects, especially through her physicality. Her body language is hysterical, setting the tone for something some audiences weren’t quite ready to embrace. The gore is wild and ridiculous, but it works as it should in the context of the film.

The restoration of the full 85-minute, uncut version of Frankenhooker was created from the archival uncut 35mm vault materials. It really brings the film to life with its vibrant color palette and crisp visual style.
