Recently at Comicpalooza in Houston, I had a chance to catch several great short films, including Corporate by Joseph Cox and Average Joe Films. Since then, I’ve checked out a few other projects from the filmmaker, including Narkilleptic.

Narkilleptic features an interview with an aspiring serial killer, Vince Young. Young wants nothing more than to rack up the bloody body count, but can’t due to his narcolepsy. Every time he gets close to committing the act, he passes right out. While the condition has made him several new friends and even a cult following, he just isn’t satisfied.

I have a love and appreciation for oddball dark humor, which is prevalent in Joseph Cox’s films. In the same vein as Corporate, Narkilleptic is quirky and just plain awkward at times. Although the film was made for a 48 hour film project, that didn’t interfere with the production value. The cinematography and editing was well-done, as was the script.

Actor Jim Owens was very natural in his role as interviewer Mitch McCloud. He keeps a playful smirk as he tries to figure out the wannabe serial killer, played by Grant Shoop. Although Shoop’s face is never seen, he carried his witty and over the top dialogue well. Everyone involved genuinely seemed like they were having fun with the project.

As mentioned, Narkilleptic came about for a 48 hour film project in Cincinnati, Ohio. The film took away four awards, including “Audience Choice.” I can definitely see why. If you enjoy films along the same line as Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, then you should enjoy this one.
