E3 2019: ‘Battletoads’ Return in Xbox Game Trailer

DLaLa Studios / Microsoft

For retro ’90s gamers, Battletoads is a video game series classic players have fond memories of, despite each title’s punishing difficulty. Those hoping to see an all-new title revive the franchise have finally gotten their wish, as a gameplay trailer for a Battletoads reboot game was just revealed at E3 2019. Featuring fan favorite fighters Rash, Pimple, and Zitz making their return, the characters look reminiscent to how they did before, but with an overall updated art style to make the graphics rather beautiful.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a modern Battletoads game in the works. An announcement trailer was made at last year’s E3, though no actual gameplay footage was shown. Seeing the actual art and how it pays homage to the original games ought to satisfy fans hoping to see a faithful recreation, and the action seems to be directly inspired by the beat ’em up style made famous by the classic titles. Unfortunately for Sony and Nintendo players, however, the new game will be exclusive to Xbox One and Windows.

You can take a look at the new gameplay trailer for Battletoads below, courtesy of Xbox on YouTube.

Battletoads first found life in 1991 as a Nintendo game developed by Rare. Multiple sequels would soon follow in the coming years, including a crossover title with the characters from Double Dragon. The franchise abruptly ended in 1994 with the release of Super Battletoads (a.k.a. Battletoads Arcade), making this new title the first Battletoads game to be made in about 25 years.

For fans of the original video game series, it was starting to look like the Battletoads franchise was long dead, never to return. Last year’s official announcement for a revival game renewed hope, and seeing the footage from this year’s E3 completely seals the deal. One question remains, however. Will the game be absolutely impossible to beat without the use of cheat codes, as were the original titles? We’ll have to see once the game is available. As of now, there’s no official release date listed, but stay tuned for more information.
