Producer Christopher Giroux has been extremely busy with Canadian film company Black Fawn Films. Most horror fans will recognize the titles that he has produced, including Antisocial (2013) and the recently released Bite (2015). Even with so much going on with his career, Christopher Giroux took the time to talk with HorrorGeekLife about his films and upcoming projects!

HorrorGeekLife – Thank you so much for talking with HGL! Please tell us – how did you get involved with the film industry? Was it something you always wanted to do or did you have your sights set on other interests when you were younger?
Christopher Giroux – I’ve always had my eyes set on working in film since I was a little kid. I remember watching movies like Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, Ghostbusters with my Dad and wanting to do just that. I started as a Production Assistant, when I was 15 yrs old and started the process there. I worked my way up the ranks moving from the camera and lighting department to producing over the years. About 5 years ago I started with Black Fawn Films and the rest is history.
HorrorGeekLife – That’s great that you felt motivated so early on. Are there any films or filmmakers that help inspire your work?
Christopher Giroux – I constantly see films that inspire or reinvent filmmaking for me. My favorite horror film is THE BEYOND, directed by the Lucio Fulci, which every time I watch it, I’m in awe. But other films makers are George A. Romeo, James Wan, Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann, and of course Quentin Tarantino always keep me motivated. Recently movies like It Follows, Horsehead, Green Room and Devil’s Candy blew me away. It’s amazing to see creative indie films taking the world by storm.
HorrorGeekLife – It’s absolutely amazing to see where indie horror is today. I know you have experience in acting and producing, as well as camera work. Do you have a preference of being in front or behind the camera? Would you like to continue with acting?
Christopher Giroux – Oh man, I am no actor hahaha. When you are producing sometimes you have to be thrown into a scene to fill the background. Some of my other so called acting roles, were just background because an old friend worked at an agency. I have no problem talking in front of hundreds of people, but put a camera on me and I freeze up.
HorrorGeekLife – Haha, so behind the camera it is! Will you continue focusing mainly on the horror genre?
Christopher Giroux – Horror films and “Genre” films have always been my main passion. I find horror is a genre where you can mix genres. You can have action-horror, comedy-horror or even romantic-horror (like Warm Bodies). Plus it’s fun working with so much blood and effects.
HorrorGeekLife – As a fan of gore and practical effects, I can imagine that’s a huge perk to filmmaking! One of your most recent films, Bite, was well-received by horror fans and some critics alike. Not only does it fall within an underutilized sub-genre, but Bite will definitely satisfy any gorehound. What was filming like, especially when it came to the effects and Casey’s transformation?
Christopher Giroux – Filming Bite was a dream come true. There was something magical about that set that will always stand out for me. We shot in Canada and Dominican Republic (which was a blast). The team worked around the clock on sets, SFX, wardrobe to make the film the gooey mess that it is.
Bite was such a team effort from production right through till the festival tour. On the Bite festival tour in Spain, I became an ordained minister and married director Chad Archibald and his wife Ali. After the ceremony we attended the screening and Ali threw her bouquet into the crowd. There are some behind the scenes look at Chad’s wedding on the BITE Blu-ray/DVD, coming soon.
HorrorGeekLife – That sounds like an amazing experience; I’m looking forward to getting my Blu-ray copy. The main actress in Bite, Elma Begovic, was great in her role. Did she struggle in her transformation from a bride-to- be to this egg laying creature? Or was she as natural as she seemed?
Christopher Giroux – Elma Begovic was a natural! Even early on the audition process we knew Elma was our queen bee! Elma was in head to toe make-up especially near the end of the film for hours on end, she was always a trooper and always in great spirit. Elma would often come into the production office in full bug make up singing Taylor Swift and teasing me about my love of Star Wars. Even though the process was so long and invasive she was always a happy ladybug.
HorrorGeekLife – It really enhances the viewing experience for fans to know that things went so well on set. Of course, Antisocial is another film that you worked on a couple of years back that is now getting a sequel. Can you tell us a bit about where the story goes next?
Christopher Giroux – Antisocial 2 is shot and has started its festival tour. It should be out on home video early 2017. Antisocial 2 goes in a completely different direction than part 1. Most sequels, go in a similar direction, Antisocial 2 takes the story to the next level. Years after Sam’s newborn child is stolen from her she is left searching the world full of infected users to track down him down. We take the Antisocial story out of the house and into the world with this follow up sequel.
HorrorGeekLife – I’m a fan of the first film, so I’m pretty excited to see what happens. Are there any other upcoming projects you’d like us to know about?
Christopher Giroux – After shooting Antisocial 2, we signed an 8-picture deal with Breakthrough Entertainment to produce 8 films back to back. Since the deal has been signed we have produced THE SUBLET, BITE, BED OF THE DEAD, LET HER OUT and most recently THE HERETICS which just wrapped shooting a few weeks ago. We still have 3 films to shoot, which should all be wrapped shooting spring of 2017. So stay tuned for lots of cool Black Fawn news!
HorrorGeekLife – Wow, you are definitely a busy guy. When you aren’t working (if you ever stop) what else do you enjoy doing?
Christopher Giroux – It’s pretty rare I am not working at all haha, but on those rare days, my girlfriend Jessica Terry and I like to travel and just simply relax. She is an Art Director (who did LET HER OUT and THE HERETICS with Black Fawn Films) so she gets the busy film lifestyle so when we have down time is fun to just enjoy the day.
HorrorGeekLife – I’m sure being in the same industry helps a lot, plus getting to work together. Thank you again for talking with me. I’ll list links below so fans can stay connected, as well as the trailer for the upcoming film Bed of the Dead.
