It’s official: Thimbleweed Park is getting a sequel. The new game will be coming in 2028, and a Steam listing is already live for the newly-announced title.
“I have good news and bad news,” designer Ron Gilbert shared on his Grumpy Gamer blog. “First the good news. The good news is that we just started production on Thimbleweed Park 2, due out in early 2028. We will self-publish with the help of a private investor. Mark Ferrari, Gary Winnick, David Fox, Octavi Navarro, Robert Megone, and others from the original team will be back!”
Confirming the sequel will be released on Steam, GOG, and Nintendo Switch, Gilbert continued, “I’ll be starting up a Thimbleweed Park 2 dev blog like we did for Thimbleweed Park and posting regularly to keep everyone up to date. Now the bad news. There is no bad news, it’s all good news.”
Released in 2017 after a successful crowdfunding campaign, Thimbleweed Park is a spiritual successor to the Lucasarts classic Maniac Mansion. Original Maniac Mansion designers Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick reunited to develop Thimbleweed Park, with the new game also carrying over a similar art style and gameplay elements. It even included several familiar characters from Maniac Mansion making appearances, along with other Easter eggs referencing the iconic 80s masterpiece.
Plot details have not been shared for Thimbleweed Park 2, but it’s being desribed as a “spoof of a classic whodunit.” It’s also been revealed that the sequel takes place primarily at “the Mansion,” which raises one big question. Will this be at the Edmund Mansion that was featured in the first Thimbleweed Park? Or does “the Mansion” refer to the famous Edison home from Maniac Mansion, further tying the two games together? Or will it be someplace else entirely?
The official description on Steam for Thimbleweed Park 2 reads, “Agents Ray and Reyes are investigating a murder at the Mansion. In a spoof of a classic whodunit, everyone is a suspect and the murderer will be confronted… If you can find them. Not really a sequel. Not really a prequel. It’s more Thimbleweed Park and just as weird.”

Set in 1987, the first Thimbleweed Park has players taking control of four different playable characters. This includes FBI agents Angela Ray and Antonio Reyes, partners who’ve been assigned to investigate a murder at the town of Thimbleweed Park. Also featured is Ransome the Clown, a foul-mouthed circus performer who’s been cursed to wear his clown makeup forever, as well as Delores, a computer programmer and the niece of local legend Chuck Edmund, the owner of the PillowTronics robotics company.
Thimbleweed Park 2 will be released in early 2028.
