Those of us who collect VHS, DVD, CD, game cartridges, and so on are proud of what we’ve built over the years. However, we also realize that the days of boasting a physical collection is a dying art now that almost everything is digital. I’ve got Spotify for my music. I’ve got Netflix and the multitude of apps for films and TV. I’ve got Steam, Origin and PSN for gaming. Hell, I’m using a digital platform to make this point.
The revolution started with digital downloads and Sony took it to the next level with PlayStation Now. I’ll briefly note that it’s not the first gaming streaming service for the public. For that, you’ll need to go back to Japan in 1995 with Satellaview. This service was only broadcast at certain times, but was certainly a forerunner for the future.
PlayStation Now, which has been available for almost 500 PS3 games, is now extending their catalog to PlayStation 4 games. The service created works great and there’s no restrictions as to the length of time you can play, or a restriction on how many you can play from the library.
It also uses cloud saves, so not only can you play it on your PS4, but in true Netlfix style, you can pick up where you left off on your PC. As with any streaming service, there is a cost involved. Price wise, you’re looking at parting with £12.99/$19.99 on a monthly basis. It may seem a tad steep, but when you consider what’s included, it’s not a bad deal. There is a 7 day free trial, which may just be bait on the fishing hook, but it worked on me pretty damn well.
All in all, PS Now is perfect for enjoying the games of yester-Sony-year and today’s titles. Now if you’ll excuse me, John Marston needs to go tie someone to the railway tracks.
