Opinions might be divided when it comes to The Purge, but for some horror fans, the franchise is a guilty pleasure. Sure, the concept is simple, and the films are mostly mindless – even if they sometimes try to send a message. They seem to get more ridiculous with each sequel, which oddly only makes them more enjoyable.
Hot off the heels of The First Purge recently premiering in theaters, news on the upcoming TV series is coming out of San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). Needless to say, the trailer is a must see video for fans of the series. Despite being developed for the small screen, it seems to really capture the tone of the films.
Set over the span of 10 episodes, the USA series will show the horrific events of a Purge night through many characters and storylines. We’ll get to see how different kinds of people would handle dealing with such an event, in which all crime is legal in the country for the span of 12 hours. Some hide, some kill, some loot, some romance, some party, and others just, well, go totally crazy. Over the course of the season, we’ll be seeing all of this unfold in different parts of the city.
While the TV series is set in the same universe as the films, the show’s story will be self-contained. That means people who haven’t watched any of the movies will still be able to jump right in. For fans wondering where the show fits in the mythology, however, the story takes place 10 years after the events of The First Purge.
Take a look at the official SDCC trailer below!
Synopsis: Revolving around a 12-hour period when all crime, including vandalism, murder, arson and theft, is legal, set in an altered United States ruled by a totalitarian political party, the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. As the clock winds down, each character is forced to reckon with their past as they discover how far they will go to survive the night.
The Purge TV series will premiere on the USA network on September 4, 2018.
