In 2009, Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland was released in theaters and became an instant hit with horror fans. A spoof on the zombie sub-genre, the horror comedy film is widely considered one of the best of its type. Given its popularity with fans, it’s strange that a sequel had never been produced, and as the years went by, it seemed more and more unlikely there would ever be an official followup.

However, as many of us are now aware, Zombieland 2 is officially in the works. While its exact plot details are unknown, there are details about the sequel which are now confirmed. Let’s go ahead and go through everything we know for sure about the anticipated film.

  • The movie is directed by Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the original
  • Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick also returned to pen the script
  • All four of the original leads in the film – Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin – are reprising their roles
  • Zombieland 2 takes place 10 years after the events of the original
  • Rumor is the film will feature mutated “super zombies”
  • Filming will start in Georgia in Jan. 2019
  • The film will officially premiere on Oct. 11, 2019

We can only speculate on what else we might see in the film. There’s no word on if the sequel will feature another celebrity cameo, in the vein of Bill Murray playing himself in the original. On one hand, that scene could never be topped. However, it would be highly amusing to see the group stumble upon another beloved Hollywood star.

Because the film is set a decade after the original, we can expect a more post-apocalyptic environment. What’s interesting to note is that the first movie came out before the zombie boom created in pop culture by The Walking Dead. Presumably, elements of that series will be spoofed in Zombieland 2 as well.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for future updates. Stay tuned!
