This week, Suns of the Gun Films’ short film The Party’s Over screened at the Nightmares Film Festival in Columbus, Ohio. Written and directed by Bryan Aguirre, the film stars Katherine Park, Teresa Navarro, Bryce Lewis, Spencer Greene, and Michael Mastre. Taking place in the early ’80s at a teenage Halloween party, it’s clear from the start the short will be paying homage to the golden age of slasher films, and it does so in a very compelling way.

On the night before Halloween, Jacki (Park) throws a Halloween costume party with some friends. Unfortunately, a silent stalker descends upon the house that night, targeting those inside. Wearing a mask acquired from one of the teens, the madman works his way through the house looking for potential victims. How will this deadly game of cat-and-mouse play out?

What I appreciated most about this fun short is just how well made it is. Ashley Valenzuela’s cinematography is top notch, the acting is well done, and even the film’s choice of music is perfect (extra points for Dion DiMucci). I also couldn’t help but really admire the film’s location, as the house used in the film is very visually appealing. Some of the best moments still come from inside the home, however, such as when Jacki turns all the lights out, leaving only jack-o-lanterns to light up the interior of the house.

The Party’s Over is believably set in 1980, perfectly capturing the tone of the era. While reminiscent some of the best slasher flicks from that time, watching this short film is a uniquely fun experience. Viewing it during the spooky holiday season only makes it that much more enjoyable, because watching it will definitely put you in the Halloween mood.

The film is currently making its rounds on the festival circuit. You can find out more information about it on Facebook and the official website.

Synopsis: It’s October 30th, 1980 in the mountainous California town of Grangerland. Jacki is back in town to throw an early Halloween party for her and some old friends. The party is over and everybody has gone home, or have they?
