Recently, we reported on the news of Decomposing Pictures creating a fan-made sequel to Halloween III: Season of the Witch. The story has generated a lot of interest, as horror fans look at the controversial film much more fondly than they did upon its initial release. Having gained a massive cult following over the past few decades, Halloween III is not the black sheep that it once was, and the concept of a follow-up film had many people intrigued.
In the ending of the original film (SPOILER ALERT), Dr. Dan Challis (Tom Atkins) desperately pleads for a TV station manager to remove Silver Shamrock Novelties’ deadly commercial from the air. The film cuts to black before definitively showing us what happened, leading fans to speculate as to whether Challis was able to get that damn commercial off the air in time (for what it’s worth, Atkins says he totally did). Because of its ambiguity, it remains one of the most chilling horror movie endings of all time, and seeing what could have happened in an unofficial sequel is not without its appeal.
Today, Return of the Witch officially premieres on YouTube, and is completely free to view. As a fan film, it’s not officially tied to the Halloween franchise, but for big fans of Halloween III, it’s very fun to watch. It’s ridiculously over-the-top, but feels like a genuine love letter to the third Halloween movie. The love and respect for the source material really shows, and the film will definitely make you nostalgic for the original. We’ll probably never see a theatrical sequel to Season of the Witch, so fun fan films like this seem to be the next best thing.
Synopsis: After finally coming to terms with the fact that his family’s legacy has been forever tarnished by the events of Halloween 1982, Connor Cochran, grandson of Conal Cochran and heir to the ‘Silver Shamrock’ company, has decided to re-emerge from the shadows and rid the world of the stigma it has placed upon his family name. With this new ‘Shamrock Unlimited’ brand looming over the nation, will Connor Cochran right the wrongs of his grandfather… or FINISH what Conal Cochran started all those years ago?
