Back in the ’90s, it was practically impossible to go a day without seeing the Crypt Keeper. In addition to hosting the beloved HBO series Tales from the Crypt, our favorite wisecracking ghoul conquered pop culture by having his face plastered on all kinds of merchandise. Although the series managed to have both a children’s cartoon and a game show spin-off, however, the Crypt Keeper was never able to have his own official video game.
Previously, we revealed how there was once in fact a video game tie-in for Tales from the Crypt in the works. Its inception and demise was thoroughly explored by the YouTube channel CryptTube, which documented how the project was scrapped during production. Originally set to be released in 1995 or 1996, the game featured John Kassir appearing as the voice of the Crypt Keeper. The idea was for PC gamers to play through their own twisted story in the tone of the TV series, and several cinematics were made before the project was shelved.
Recently, CryptTube was able to acquire some of the actual in-game photos and a cinematic with the Crypt Keeper, revealing them in an all new video. If you want the complete history of the game, you can first catch up by watching Part 1 and Part 2 of the channel’s documentation (dubbed Crypt Discussions) on it so far. The newest video can be seen below, with footage of the animation of the Crypt Keeper coming up around the 7-minute mark.
Obviously, these graphics are heavily outdated compared to today’s standards, but the footage brings about several waves of nostalgia. It seems unlikely we will ever see a playable version of the axed Tales from the Crypt game, but this footage is nonetheless amazing to see. That the series wasn’t able to have its own video game seems like a missed opportunity, especially after getting a small taste of what could have been.
