James Wan may be doing work outside of the horror genre, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots. After kicking off the Saw franchise by helming the first movie, Wan would launch an even bigger horror movie series when he directed The Conjuring. The film series has produced multiple spin-offs, including two separate Annabelle movies about a creepy, possessed doll. Little Annabelle will be back on the big screen soon enough with a new sequel slated for 2019, but eagle-eyed viewers will be able to spot her this month in Wan’s newest movie.
Directed by Wan, Aquaman is a new movie based on the DC superhero. It stars Jason Momoa as the titular Justice League member, with The Conjuring star Patrick Wilson as King Orm. But Wilson won’t be the only familiar face from Wan’s horror series to appear in Aquaman, as Annabelle herself has been confirmed to appear. You’ll want to really look close to try to spot her though, as the cameo apparently lasts for just a fleeting moment.
Reportedly, the Annabelle cameo occurs very early in the movie. It happens when Aquaman is boarding Mera’s ship as the prepare to head out on a mission. Around this time, an Annabelle doll can be seen on the ocean floor. Does this mean Ed and Lorraine Warren finally had enough of Annabelle’s antics and tossed her into the sea, letting her become Aquaman’s problem to deal with?
For his part, Wan played it coy when asked about the reference, but offered his own theory to explain Annabelle’s appearance in the film:
“I don’t know what you are referring to. [laughs] I have no idea what Easter Egg you are referencing here, if it’s an Easter egg. … Maybe Patrick Wilson is really Ed Warren pretending to be King Orm? What can I say? I’d like to see that film, how about that?”
James Wan’s Aquaman premieres in theaters on Dec. 21, 2018.
