As the Friday the 13th movie series wore on, Jason Voorhees found himself in some rather bizarre situations ranging from Manhattan to outer space. Still, nothing we’ve seen from the franchise would be quite as crazy as these five nearly-made sequels, which were all abandoned prior to production – for better or for worse.
4The Kevin Spirtas sequel to The New Blood
Following the release of Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Paramount was interested in keeping the franchise alive for at least one more installment. Director John Carl Buechler (R.I.P.) was interested in helming another sequel, and had begun developing a treatment to bring back Lar Park Lincoln’s Tina Shepard after her release from an insane asylum. Lincoln herself wanted to return as well, and had co-written an alternate screenplay with Tina now working as a psychologist.
While these concepts are easy to envision, a third idea for a sequel to The New Blood would have taken the story in a totally different direction. Kevin Spirtas, who plays Tina’s surviving boyfriend Nick in The New Blood, had written a bizarre script of his own. Literally describing the potential movie as a “vehicle” for himself, the story Spirtas devised would have retconned the events of the seventh movie as just a long dream. It would also reveal Nick himself to be the real killer, and he even murders Tina.
Perhaps Spirtas wasn’t paying attention when A New Beginning hit theaters and created an uproar by replacing Jason Voorhees as the villain. Paramount most likely still remembered, however, and the studio made it clear they’d rather send Jason to New York than replace him with another copycat killer.
