A Quiet Place

One of the most talked about films from 2018 is now on Hulu. Directed by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place stars Krasinski and his real life wife, Emily Blunt, and follows a family living in a post-apocalyptic world where silence is the key to survival. The world has been ravaged by monstrous creatures who hunt by sound. The film is further proof that PG-13 can be terrifying.

The Domestics

If you enjoy post-apocalyptic wasteland survival films, The Domesics is right up your alley. Following an attack on the country of mass destruction, the population breaks off into factions- rogue gangs and those called “Domestics” who are trying to survive in non-hostile ways. As two married Domestics are trying to make their way to a safe haven, they must do everything they can to survive. The film has been described as Mad Max meets The Purge.

I Saw the Devil

This South Korean film is one of the best revenge flicks ever released, in addition to beautiful cinematography and top-notch acting. When the fiance of a secret service agent is brutally murdered and dismembered by a serial killer, he begins a cat-and-mouse game with the man responsible, a cycle of torture and release. Although an English remake has been talked about over the years, the original will be hard to top.

Pyewacket

After losing her father, a teenage girl, Leah, and her mother move to a secluded house in the woods, despite Leah’s protests. Once in the new house, the teen goes into the woods and summons a demon to kill her mom (played by The Walking Dead’s Laurie Holden). After the ritual, strange things begin happening to Leah and her friends, leading Leah to regret her actions. This 2017 film has flown a bit under the radar, despite being a solid and creepy horror film.

Ghost Stories

Phillip, a man on a mission to out fraudulent psychics, meets with an elderly paranormal investigator he has always looked up to, and is given three unexplained cases to investigate. A security guard working the night shift haunted by young girl; a teenage boy who hit the devil with his car in the woods; and a man faced with a poltergeist in his home. Ghost Stories is truly frightening at times, and ends with a punch to the gut.

Tragedy Girls

One of the best modern slashers is this female-led horror-comedy that features high school seniors who turn to committing murder in order to gain attention for their true crime blog. It isn’t always easy for films to get audiences to completely fall in love with serial killers, but Tragedy Girls accomplishes just that. If you love slashers, watch this one as soon as you can.

Southbound

This anthology features five connecting stories of travelers confronting different horrors along a stretch of highway. “A Way Out” follows two men who are being followed by ghostly creatures before being confronted by the past; in “Siren,”  three stranded women are picked up by a couple, but something strange is going on as they take the women to their house; a driver runs over a familiar woman in “The Accident” and panics over what it will do to his life; a man confronts a demon-filled town while looking for his sister in “Jailbreak,” but is faced with severe consequences; “The Way In” circles back to the story of the men in the first story and shows why they are on the run.

The Den

While there are several found footage films dealing with the dangers of the internet, The Den undoubtedly stands out as one of the best. While experimenting with an online social media site that utilizes webcams, Elizabeth witnesses a murder and soon becomes a target herself. She begins to unravel what exactly she has stumbled upon, but soon those around her are in danger as well. Even if you’re not a fan of found footage films, you may still find something to like with The Den.
