NFF Short Film Review: ‘Together’ by Ryan Oksenberg

Every year, the annual Nightmares Film Festival always presents horror fans with some of the most interesting and unique new additions to the horror genre. In addition to the many feature films showing at the event, a wide variety of short films are also screened in multiple short film blocks. We watched the film as a part of our coverage for NFF 2019, and as it continues to stick with me after the festival, it’s clear that the short film is definitely worth a viewing.

Together is written and directed by Ryan Oksenberg. It stars Arielle Hader, Clayton Farris, and Karin Collison. The story follows a biohazard remediation cleaner (Hader) hiring a new assistant (Farris) who happens to have an insatiable appetite for crime scene gore. Although her new employee is exceptionally “good” at his new job (if you want to put it that way), keeping him on the team will require coming to terms with having an apparent zombie on the payroll.

You could probably surmise that this horror short is filled with dark comedy, and there are plenty of hilarious moments. The story is original and highly amusing throughout, though I wouldn’t have minded to see it go just a little bit longer. As the story progresses, it implies a larger world in this universe which seems to involve the occasional zombie attack, while also suggesting that maybe there could be some good to come out of it. Darkly funny with an interesting concept, Together is one of the most memorable short films to come out of NFF 2019. If you get the chance to catch a screening, you should most definitely check this one out.

You can watch a teaser trailer for Together below, and you can find out more information at the official website.
