Nicolas Cage has no shortage of bizarre movie roles he has taken on in his film career, but of course, that’s something we really love about the actor. With the announcement of his next movie courtesy of Deadline, it’s clear Cage is adding another must-see title to the list. Cage has signed on to star in the upcoming movie Wally’s Wonderland, and if that title wasn’t amazing enough, wait until you read what it’s about.
In Wally’s Wonderland, Cage will play a janitor “forced to spend the night in a twisted amusement park where he is pulled into a living nightmare. As the threatening animatronic characters come to life, the janitor has to fight his way from one monster to another to survive until morning and get out of the park.” The screenplay coes from G.O. Parsons, with Grant Cramer, Jeremy Davis, and Danny Roth producing. Kevin Lewis (The Drop) is directing.
Of course, this plot certainly sounds reminiscent of the popular Five Nights at Freddy’s video game series from creator Scott Cawthon. In those games, players control a security guard working the night shift at a pizza joint where the animatronics wander the halls at night and killing anyone they find. There have been multiple attempts to get a live-action movie adaptation made based on the games, but as of now, the project remains stuck in development hell.
However, it’s worth mentioning The Banana Splits Movie, another film which also seems to have been inspired by the FNAF video games. Using the actual characters from the old Hanna-Barbera series The Banana Splits, the movie presents them as sentient animatronics who turn homicidal when they learn the network is planning to cancel their TV series. The film is a lot of fun to watch and shows that there is room in the horror world for movies about killer animatronics. Throw in Nicolas Cage and you can sign me up right away.
