If there aren’t enough giant snakes in cinema for you, then maybe you’ll be thrilled with today’s news. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Anaconda is getting rebooted with Columbia Pictures taking what’s described as a “Meg-style approach” to the series. It’s not entirely clear what that means, but given the size of the shark in The Meg, that could mean the new movie will introduce the largest anaconda yet. No producer is yet officially attached to the project.
Evan Daugherty, who wrote Snow White and the Huntsman and co-wrote Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, is on board to write the screenplay for the new Anaconda. Reportedly, Daugherty’s story is “not a remake or a sequel but a reimagining” of the original Anaconda. Additional details on the reboot’s plot aren’t clear, but at this point, it sounds like the movie won’t be a follow-up to the prior installments of the series, nor will it be a simple re-telling of the original film’s story.
Released in 1997, the original Anaconda starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson, Eric Stoltz, Kari Wuhrer, and Jonathan Hyde. It follows a group of filmmakers venturing into the Amazon to create a documentary, only to run afoul of the area’s legendary anaconda. While certainly a cheesy B-movie, the film nonetheless found its audience, becoming a cult classic and, at the least, the most memorable movie about a killer giant snake. In the following years, a theatrical sequel would be released, as would three direct-to-video sequels.
There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see the new Anaconda slither its way onto the big screen, but with the project a go at Columbia Pictures, more updates should be soon forthcoming. For now, you can pay a quick revisit to the original by watching a clip from it below!
