Zombieland: Double Tap is now available on Blu-ray, and if you’ve got the original in your collection, you’ll need to have this one sitting on your shelf right alongside it. Releasing in theaters last October, Zombieland: Double Tap premiered ten full years after the release of the original Zombieland. This set the sequel’s story a decade into the zombie apocalypse, with the characters now residing in the White House before embarking on their next adventure across “Zombieland.”
What really makes this movie work more than anything is that it brings back all of its main cast. As we saw with Amazon’s doomed TV series adaptation, recasting Columbus, Little Rock, Wichita, and Tallahassee is a very bad idea, as Zombieland fans could never accept new actors in these iconic roles. Fortunately, the whole gang is all back together for Double Tap, and their on-screen chemistry works just as well now as it did back in 2009.
It’s interesting how the first Zombieland came out at the beginning of the rise of zombies in the mainstream. Just a year after its release, The Walking Dead would premiere on AMC, launching a zombie trend as it became the most-watched show on television. Now that the fad seems to be cooling down a bit, it feels appropriate to check back in with the folks in Zombieland to see how they’ve been getting along in their version of the apocalypse.
Zombieland: Double Tap is a great sequel that more than does the original film justice. The returning characters and similar comedic tone make the movie feel like a true continuation of the first Zombieland, while the new characters, locations, and types of zombies keep it feeling fresh. At the end of the day, I really enjoyed our return to the world of Zombieland, and part of me hopes they’ll be back in another decade to do Zombieland 3.
I love the Blu-ray release of the film because it comes with a ton of special features. As a fan of commentary tracks, I was happy to see there’s one included with director Ruben Fleischer. There are also many alternate and extended scenes, a blooper reel, and several behind-the-scenes videos to get even more out of the movie. As a Zombieland (and now Zombieland: Double Tap) fan, I’m pretty stoked to have this in my collection.
Zombieland: Double Tap is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital.
