This article contains spoilers for Apple TV’s Cape Fear Episode 8

Through the first seven episodes, Cape Fear has required the audience to suspend disbelief because of the sheer absurdity of what is happening. However, Episode 8, “Los tiempos de Dios son Perfectos,” really pushes the limits of believability. While the cat-and-mouse game continues with some great twists and turns, some scenes and coincidences make it hard to fully get on board.

Things pick up right where they left off in Episode 7. The cops arrive to arrest Max (Javier Bardem) after Anna’s (Amy Adams) dad plants fake evidence. He’s taken away, and the Bowdens share a brief moment of peace that doesn’t last long. When Natalie (Lily Collias) goes for a swim in the pool, she discovers a trunk at the bottom. Inside are the body parts of Ray (Jamie Hector), whom Max shot and killed last episode. The gun used was one of Tom’s (Patrick Wilson), and just like that, the cat-and-mouse game continues.

Anna visits her father, Brandon Devereaux (Ted Levine), to get him out of town, only to discover he was in it for the money all along, something she should have known from the start. Meanwhile, Natalie visits Nevaeh (Malia Pyles) in prison to learn about Max, but she’s met with nothing but hate and warnings.

Tom is arrested as Anna’s father appears on the news. He talks about the conspiracy to frame Max for Ray’s murder. It’s a lot to take in, and some of it makes sense, even if it’s wrong, which doesn’t look good for Tom or the Bowden family.

There are a couple of big dramatic moments among the Bowden family members following these events. Tom and Anna have a blow-up when she visits him in prison, as the truth comes out about the possibility that Max is Natalie’s biological father. Once home, Anna gets ready to start drinking, something she hasn’t done in a long while, but Natalie interrupts, and that begins another tale.

Drunken nights with many men, and the uncertainty about whether Max was her actual father. While the family is coming apart, at least some truth is now coming out, though it might be too little, too late.

While Zach (Joe Anders) continues his battle in the hospital to recover his lost personality after being drugged, it’s Natalie who is stepping up for the family. However, that changes when she storms over to Max’s to confront him, gun in hand, and ends up shooting him. Miraculously, or not, he survives, but Natalie is arrested, putting both her and Tom behind bars.

It is unclear yet whether Max wants to kill the entire Bowden family or just destroy their lives. Either way, he is succeeding on many levels.

After confronting Max in the hospital and finally realizing there is no reasoning with the man, Anna uses evidence from Ray’s phone, including pics uploaded to the iCloud, to pinpoint the houseboat on Cape Fear River. She drives off to her destination as the radio blares warnings of a huge storm on the way.

This is familiar territory for anyone who has seen the 1991 film. The episode ends with a close-up on Anna’s focused, determined eyes.

An Epic Showdown Between Anna Bowden and Max Cady Is on the Horizon

The show is best when it is at its most ridiculous. Javier Bardem continues to fully embody his character, while the Bowden children, particularly Lily Collias, provide some impressive dramatic performances. However, there are many times when you just have to suspend disbelief and enjoy the experience.

Some timelines and events don’t add up or seem far too convenient, especially given how many there are. While some of the plot elements are well done, it’s hard to believe that both Tom and Anna, two experienced lawyers, could not see what was coming.

The series has two episodes left, and the big showdown between Anna and Max is coming. The wild card is Max’s half-sister, Crystal (Juliette Lewis), and it should be interesting to see what role she plays. The chaos is now in full swing, so here’s hoping the gloves come off completely and the show wraps up with a bang.

Cape Fear Episode 8 is now streaming on Apple TV. New episodes premiere every Friday through July 31.
