Review: ‘The Addams Family’ (2019) on Blu-ray

The Addams Family | MGM / Universal Pictures

They’re creepy, they’re kooky, and they’re now available on Blu-ray. From MGM and Universal Pictures, The Addams Family had a decent run in theaters when it premiered last year, bringing in enough money in ticket sales to warrant an upcoming sequel. Now, those who missed the Addams’ latest adventure along with those who want to take it home to watch it again can pick up the flick on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital outlets.

Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan direct The Addams Family using a screenplay written by Matt Lieberman and Pamela Pettler. Several big names are also featured in the cast to voice the latest incarnation of The Addams Family. This includes Charlize Theron as Morticia, Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Nick Kroll as Fester, Snoop Dogg as Cousin It, and Bette Midler as Grandmama.

For those who know The Addams Family only from the black-and-white TV series and/or the cult classic ’90s movies, the character designs of the family members may look a bit off. In fact, the art style is a direct throwback to the original comic series which started the franchise. I really enjoyed the visuals and found them to be a good way of depicting The Addams Family if the characters were to go animated, and bringing the series full circle by modeling them after their original iterations is really a nice touch.

The Addams Family doesn’t really add anything new to the franchise, feeling more as a reinvention to introduce the kooky family to a new generation of fans. If you grew up with the classic show or the ’90s movies and cartoon series, the film will feel like an entertaining love letter to those versions. Still, it’s probably today’s younger filmgoers who will probably enjoy the film the most, and it’s definitely a good way of introducing modern children to the franchise.

At the end of the day, this new take on The Addams Family won’t replace the ’90s films or the original TV series, but it’s a fun film that should make for a solid addition to your Blu-ray collection if you’re a fan of the series. What’s also nice about the home video release release is that it comes packed with special features. I’m particularly fond of watching deleted and extended scenes, and the Addams Family Blu-ray includes many of them. There are lots of other fun features to find on there as well. Below, you can take a look at the full list of special features on the home video release.

BONUS FEATURES on BLURAY™️, DVD & DIGITAL:
