When it comes to modern slasher films, Happy Death Day and its sequel are among the very best. Featuring a killer in a bizarre baby mask that has since become iconic, the gimmick of these movies is that they are given a dash of Groundhog Day into a typical slasher movie style storyline. Every day, a young woman is forced to relive her brutal murder over and over, stuck in a never-ending time loop of painful deaths.
Released last year, Happy Death Day 2U brings back original star Jessica Rothe as Tree, again stuck in a slasher film time loop with a mystery to solve at its heart. After this sequel was released in theaters, writer-director Christopher Landon would later state that he had an idea for a third installment and had even written a treatment for Happy Death Day 3. Although the second movie didn’t sell quite as many tickets as the original, producer Jason Blum is still insisting that he wants to see a third movie happen at the studio.
“Let me tell you, I’m working overtime on it, believe me,” Blum tells Ash Crossan in a recent online interview. The producer adds that there’s “nothing official yet” when it comes to Happy Death Day 3, but it should help for fans of the franchise to know that another sequel is still in the cards at Blumhouse. Certainly, the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood for months may have stalled some of that project’s potential progress, but it still seems like seeing Happy Death Day 3 going into production soon is a good possibility
