Paramount Pictures is getting back into the slasher movie business by teaming up with Spyglass Media Group to release Scream 5 in 2021. The upcoming sequel has been in the works for months, and word is that filming will begin this summer in South Carolina. According to Variety, the film has since been picked up by Paramount with the company handling worldwide marketing and distribution.

Previously, the late Wes Craven directed all four Scream movies while Kevin Williamson and Ehren Kruger wrote the screenplays. For Scream 5Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick co-writing the script. It is expected that the movie will serve as a sequel to the other Scream films, as it will include at least one returning character from those other movies.

As of now, David Arquette is confirmed to return to the role of Dewey Riley in Scream 5. More casting announcements are reportedly soon to be revealed in the coming weeks. Franchise star Neve Campbell has confirmed that she has entered discussions with the producers and filmmakers about potentially reprising the role of Sidney Prescott, but news of her casting has yet to be made official. It would obviously not truly feel like a Scream movie without her, so let’s hope she’s signed on soon.

Story details have not been revealed, but it seems likely the upcoming sequel will follow a Ghostface mask-wearing serial killer (or killers) utilizing horror genre tropes to murder a variety of people. Of course, some fan favorites should be returning as well, but the clear downside there is this means Dewey and possibly Sidney or Gale might finally get killed off after surviving four movies.

An official release date hasn’t been set, so stay tuned for more updates.
