The latest (…unnecessary?) film reboot news takes aim at 1996’s summer blockbuster hit, Twister. The film is in the very early stages with Universal Pictures, but it has been confirmed that Joseph Kosinski is in negotiations to direct. Kosinski previously directed Top Gun: Maverick, which is set to release December 2020, and TRON: Legacy in 2010.
Released on May 10, 1996, Twister starred power duo Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, along with Jami Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Cary Elwes. With a screenplay written by best-selling author Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin (who appeared in various films, including Prom Night, 1980, and Halloween II, 1981), Twister was directed by Jan de Bont (Speed) and has topped $495 million. The film undoubtedly inspired tornado chasers for years to come.

Variety reports that Universal is still in talks with script writers, but we do know Frank Marshall has signed on as producer.

Synopsis: During the approach of the most powerful storm in decades, university professor Dr. Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and an underfunded team of students prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device conceived by her estranged husband, Bill (Bill Paxton). When Harding tells Bill that Dorothy is ready for testing — and that their privately funded rival Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes) has stolen the idea and built his own — Bill rejoins the team for one last mission.
