shudder host review
Shudder

As lockdowns continue, film and TV productions are forced to get a bit more creative, with many using webcam technology such as Zoom and Skype more often. While this is not exactly new (see: The Den, Unfriended), it can still be a fun ride for the audience when done well. Shudder’s newest original movie, Host, proves this while bringing thrills and chills along the way.

While in lockdown, a group of friends gathers on Zoom for a seance, to be guided by an experienced medium who joins the video call. The session takes an unexpected turn when a malevolent entity comes to play, terrorizing the friends in their own homes.

Host does not bring a lot of originality to the table; in fact, it borrows quite heavily from other popular horror films, namely Paranormal Activity and Shutter. This results in a degree of predictability that doesn’t allow some of the scares to hit as hard. However, what the film lacks in originality, it makes up for in execution. As a creator, if you aren’t the first in a category, at least try to be one of the best. That is exactly what director Rob Savage and crew pulled off.

The writers (Gemma Hurley, Rob Savage, Jed Shepherd) wisely avoided common cliches we typically see with a female cast, like foolish decisions or characters suddenly becoming all-knowing, hardcore survivors. The core cast- played by Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, and Caroline Ward- were as authentic as can be, which made them relatable from start to finish. Their reactions made us feel the same dread and anxiety they felt along the way.

Considering the low budget and how quickly it was made, less than-impressive acting would typically be expected, sending the film into the void of one-off, forgettable films. Especially with a runtime of under sixty minutes. However, as we have seen on social media this weekend, Host is neither forgettable nor making its way into the void.

Overall, Shudder’s Host packs a fast-paced, terrifying punch while introducing us to a talented cast. It is an excellent way to spend an hour of your time. Just turn off the lights, turn up the volume, and enjoy.
