Building on the theme of last week’s pivotal moment, episode 5 of Dexter: New Blood, “Runaway,” features a few more, including yet another familiar face and even more of Dexter’s lies coming undone. Circumstances put him in situations we’ve all seen before, but the bigger picture seems to be that the town of Iron Lake will soon face more than one revelation about who is living in their midst. Those reveals will hopefully be both fun and shocking for everyone.
At the end of last week’s episode, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) realizes that Harrison (Jack Alcott) lied about what happened at the school and that his son inherited his Dark Passenger. Dexter makes the mistakes many have before him, vowing not to make the same mistakes from his past without fully realizing he is incapable of that kind of compassion and empathy. It’s a lie he tells himself, and Deb/his new conscience (Jennifer Carpenter) calls him out on it. He will try and fail, as Harry (James Remar) did, but seeing how it plays out should be interesting.
Meanwhile, Harrison, still reveling in the hero mantle that has been thrust upon him, goes to a party that is sort of in his honor. While there, he takes some pills and overdoses but is saved at the last minute by a quick-thinking Audrey (Johnny Sequoyah). However, he says something that disturbs Audrey, a slip of the tongue that causes even more dominoes to fall at the end of this episode. Dexter, of course, won’t wait around for the cops to do something and lets his Dark Passenger loose on those responsible for supplying kids pills at the party. However, as Deb points out, this is more personal and, for once, gets no argument from Dexter.

Angela (Julia Jones) goes to New York to talk to Matt Caldwell (Steve M. Robertson) face-to-face and, as we all know, finds out once and for all that Matt is not at the hotel Kurt (Clancy Brown) claimed. So why is Kurt lying? That becomes painfully clear during this episode as we discover more about who is confining women and hunting them down. Even worse for Dexter, while in New York, Angela attends a conference that has a very familiar guest speaker. Someone who shares another nugget of information that gnaws at her police brain. “Runaway” ends with Angela doing some more investigation after she hears what Harrison told Audrey.
Last week’s little Trinity Killer nugget is touched on again this week, which should add to the ever-growing plate of chaos that Dexter has to deal with going forward. More storylines introduced, other pieces of information explored in-depth, all to make his life a big house of cards teetering on the brink of collapse. If it does come tumbling down, and it probably will, the results have the potential to be glorious.
