In the first two episodes of From, we learn a bit about the people, the newcomers, and the townspeople’s rules for staying alive. In episode 3, “Choosing Day, some make choices and see the consequences of not following the rules. This highlights yet again how people are trying to live like this day after day—if you can call this living.

Jade (David Alpay), who was in the car that hit the Matthews’ RV, has concluded that his buddy has dropped him off in some real-life game experience. He goes from Colony House to the diner, exploring the town and interacting with the town’s people, trying to find clues to figure out the ‘game’ he is playing. He doesn’t even believe his friend is dead, and to be honest, the story the people of this town tell the newcomers would be tough to accept.

Meanwhile, the Matthews family has to choose where they want to live: the Colony House or in town. Before they decide, Father Khatri (Shaun Majumder) gives the parents a walk around the town, answers questions, including the punishment box, and graphically shows them what happened to the mother and daughter when someone didn’t follow the rules. It’s interesting to watch their faces take this all in, the disbelief fighting against the reality of the situation.

Putting someone in the box, outside, overnight, with no talisman to protect them, is a death sentence, this town’s version of capital punishment, and it is this decision that weighs heavy on Sheriff Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau). While not a perfect solution, Father Khatri points out that if he changes his mind and doesn’t use the box, people will see there is no punishment for crimes moving forward.

It’s just another layer of stress that these people deal with as they go about their lives day after day.

While the tension, atmosphere, and dread surrounding this show are still as captivating as ever this week, a few storylines feel out of place, as if they are trying to force it a bit too much. They juggle many storylines this week and do it pretty well, but I’m not sure they are all necessary, regardless of whether we are still in the ‘setting the stage’ part of this show.

There are more reveals to come, so let’s hope we move past this part and into more exciting territory, including diving deeper into some creepy and interesting people in this town.

Throwing the Jade storyline into the mix was interesting, making things even weirder story-wise. By the end of the episode, he has realized that perhaps there is more going on here. However, his struggle is an interesting contrast to what the Matthews family is dealing with. Two parents with two young children at different ages coping with this adds a whole other element of stress.

With all the ideas and storylines thrown out there this week in “Choosing Day,” it seems time to dive deeper into some of the hidden truths of the town that the writers have been skillfully dancing around up until this point. The town still feels like a bomb of tension waiting to explode, and it should be interesting to see where they take this story next.
