Warner Bros.

Based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name, I Am Legend was adapted for the big screen in 2007 by Warner Bros. Pictures. Directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 1 & 2), the film starred Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville, one of the assumed few survivors following a deadly virus outbreak. Now, 15 years after the film’s release, a sequel is in the works.

The project comes from Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, who will star in and produce the sequel. Very little is known at this time, including a director and how exactly Smith’s character will return. SPOILER for the first film: Dr. Robert Neville sacrifices himself for the greater good. However, an alternate ending exists, which is more in line with the book.

The alternate ending, included in the Special Edition DVD released in 2008, is much more hopeful. Dr. Robert Neville and fellow survivors Anna Montez (Alice Braga) and Ethan (Charlie Tahan) start their journey to Vermont, searching for a survivors’ colony. If Smith’s Neville is to star in the, I Am Legend sequel; this will undoubtedly be the ending to be used—unless, of course, the doctor is only shown in flashbacks, archives, and such.

As mentioned, Michael B. Jordan, who has skyrocketed into major studio success, is joining the cast. Creed III will be released later this year, serving as the actor’s directorial debut.

Per Deadline, “Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo are producing via their Outlier Society banner. Smith and Westbrook Studios Co-President/Head of Motion Pictures Jon Mone will produce the project, with Ryan Shimazaki overseeing on behalf of Westbrook Studios. James Lassiter will serve as EP. Goldsman and Greg Lessans will also produce via Weed Road Pictures.”
