It has been revealed that filmmaker Fede Alvarez is working on a new Alien franchise film. Alien (1979) original director Ridley Scott has signed on as producer under his Scott Free banner. Alvarez will take the helm as writer and director for the 20th Century Studios project.

Although the release date is still TBA, it is expected to arrive at Hulu upon its release. The plot is also tightly under wraps at this time, but it has been described as a standalone film “unconnected to the previous movies.”

20th Century division president Steve Asbell recently spoke to THR about the studio’s future and said about the upcoming Alien film, “It’s not a film that has to be all things to all people with those gargantuan budgets. They get to be authentically what they are. And this is closer to its genre roots.”

The last entry in the Alien franchise was the prequel Alien: Covenant, released in May 2017. It followed Prometheus, which was released in June 2012. Ridley Scott directed both prequel films. The last Alien film released that was not a prequel was Alien Resurrection, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and written by Joss Whedon.

Alvarez’s first feature film was 2013’s Evil Dead remake, with the heavy gore and new story quickly putting the filmmaker on fans’ radars. The film starred Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, and Lou Taylor Pucci. In 2016, Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe, starring Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, and Dylan Minnette, proved another success with horror fans. Don’t Breathe 2 was released in 2021 and directed by Rodo Sayagues, who co-wrote both films with Alvarez.

Fede Alvarez’s latest genre film is Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was released on Netflix in February 2022. Directed by David Blue Garcia, Alvarez again partnered with Rodo Sayagues to write the story, and Chris Thomas Devlin wrote the screenplay.
