‘Becky’ (2020) Blu-ray Review: A Worthy Special Edition Release

During the midst of the pandemic in 2020, movie theaters were closed, and if you wanted to see a film on a big screen, you had to go to the drive-in. Several films were considered to be minor successes, films that, under normal circumstances, would never have had a theatrical run. Along with The Wretched, Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s Becky was another. Though it was in many ways nothing more than a modern Home Alone remake, several things set it apart. The sequel, Becky 2: The Wrath of Becky, will debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2023.

Becky was initially scheduled to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2020. However, the focus shifted to drive-ins, digital platforms, and VOD in June of that year before being released on physical media in September. In February of 2023, Ronin Flix is giving the film what it’s calling the hero treatment with a brand new BD-50 Blu-ray release with enhanced video and audio, limited edition packaging, and more than an hour of never-before-seen bonus features.

Becky (LuLu Wilson) and her father, Jeff (Joel McHale), have had a strained relationship since her mother’s death the year before. Jeff has begun to date Kayla (Amanda Brugel), and along with her young son, they take a trip to their lake house near the woods. They aren’t expecting the arrival of Dominick Lewis (Kevin James), a Neo-Nazi who just escaped prison with his pals and is searching for a key hidden on Jeff’s property. They hold the whole family hostage, and the bullied Becky will have to learn to stand up for herself and cross the line in order to stop Dominick.

I don’t want to repeat what has already been covered here at Horror Geek Life with another full-length review, so here are a few thoughts on the film. I went into the picture blindly, unaware of the plot’s specifics. Seeing that Joel McHale and Kevin James were involved made me assume it would be comedic. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Becky is a brutal take on the Home Alone formula, with LuLu Wilson going all in and completely owning the film. While McHale’s role is minimal, Kevin James proves there’s much more to him than being the funny guy. He’s genuinely scary and gives his all to a character we would never associate him with. Wilson is the true shining star of Becky, going through a complete metamorphosis throughout the picture. I’m excited about the sequel and how she develops the character further.

As the original Blu-ray release was bare-bones, Ronin Flix was sure to include some interesting features, including an introduction by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, “Two Heads are Better than One: Directing Becky, No Laughing Matter” with Joel McHale, “The Fight of Her Life” with LuLu Wilson, fan art and behind-the-scenes photo galleries, a commentary with Wilson and screenwriters Ruckus and Lane Skye, a reversible sleeve, and a slipcase with new artwork.

This is a terrific release from Ronin, a step up from the previous, and the perfect purchase to prep yourself for the upcoming sequel. Available February 7, 2023.
