Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, the duo behind the recently concluded hit FX series Atlanta, have a new project coming to the small screen this Spring. This project, titled Swarm, will settle in the thriller, horror, drama, and dark comedy genres. Glover is most known for his work in Community, as young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and for his musical persona, Childish Gambino.

Glover and Nabers created Swarm and have written multiple episodes. Glover will also direct the first episode. Malia Obama, the daughter of former President Barack Obama, has also written an episode.

Swarm stars Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) in the lead role of Dre and will be joined by Damson Idris (Snowfall), Chloe Bailey (Last Holiday), Leon (Cool Runnings), Karen Rodriguez (Shining Girls), and Rory Culkin (Scream 4, Castle Rock).

The plot follows Dre (Fishback)’s dark obsession with a Lizzo and Beyoncé-inspired pop star. The series will take a deep dive into the dangerous side of toxic fandom and explore celebrity obsession.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nabers said about the series: “We were really interested in creating an antihero story – through the lens of a Black, modern-day woman.”

Regarding Dominique Fishback’s performance, both creators gave high praise, with Nabers saying, “When we shot the last scene of the pilot, every single person stopped what they were doing and gave Dom a standing ovation for three minutes. I’ve been doing TV for a long time, and I’ve never seen that. That was the moment that Donald and I looked at each other, and we were like, ‘All right—we got something right.”

Regarding the overall cast from the same interview, Glover said, “A lot of people did it out of the kindness of their hearts, and they did a really great job. – Dom, Damson, Chloe. I was really blown away at how hard they worked on the tone ’cause it’s a strange one.”

An intense trailer has been released for Swarm. The statement “Who’s your favorite artist?” is played on repeat and weaves through several anxiety-inducing clips. The trailer can be seen below, and the series will premiere on Prime Video on March 17th, 2023.
