Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Episode 6 “Terrifying Miracles

We’re finally getting somewhere, but it’s still feeling like we’re running in kaiju-sized circles. A few confirmations have taken place in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6, “Terrifying Miracles. No real spoiler here, but Godzilla is still alive. We all knew it had to be, but now (1955) Lee and Keiko know it too. We also have confirmation that Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira) is still alive. The parallel scenes witnessing Godzilla in his respective presents (1955 and 2015) worked out nicely.

These scenes rival Godzilla Minus One’s gorgeous shots, but that’s all this episode’s got. Despite getting more clues to some mysteries, the characters are no more interesting than they were a week ago.

We begin in 1955, with Dr. Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto) and Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) getting more acquainted and comfortable with each other. Their fling begins here while they’re still trying to secure control over allocations to the Monarch budget. Hobnobbing isn’t Lee’s strong suit, and this lack gets under Keiko’s skin.

The sexual tension between these two is already under attack as Keiko sees Lee’s failure to keep them in control as a major weakness. She’s willing to put up with good old-fashioned racism when facing the money behind the program, but Lee can’t be bothered to take advantage of his privilege to put them in command.

In 2015, Lee is being transported by Monarch to an undisclosed location when a staged coup happens. Agent Duvall (Elisa Lasowski) pretends to go rogue by helping him escape. As the least green character, it’s interesting they chose Lee Shaw as their pigeon. He’s too easily fooled into believing there’s dissent in the ranks of Monarch. That’s not really the character they’ve established so far.

By the time Cate (Anna Sawai), Kentaro (Ren Watabe), and May (Kiersey Clemons) return to Cate’s mother’s home, Lee is already there, waiting with Duvall. This is where Monarch lets the Toucan Sam team follow their nose so Monarch can do some catching up. It seems like it would have been easier just to offer them jobs at Monarch. With their budget, they could have met everyone’s price. It almost seems like Lee is in on recruiting these kids without paying them. It would make sense if it weren’t for Lee’s charismatic quips in his interrogations.

Lee promises Cate, Kentaro, and May that they can help stop an event that would be a hundred times worse than G-Day. Teasing they might find Ken and Cate’s father only sweetens the deal.

Tim (Joe Tippett) and Natalia (Mirelly Taylor) inspect Hiroshi Randa’s office through proper channels since they don’t have to sneak into the quarantined zone. Magic happens in this office as the two Monarch agents manage to Scooby-Doo the predicted locations of Titan appearances by studying the tack holes in the wall where there had previously been a giant poster of the world. Somehow, Tim Draws a fair representation of the continents exactly where they would be if one knew the image of the missing poster. Now, they know where the protagonists are heading. Why wouldn’t they have already heard this from Duvall? Yes, I said tack holes. Is this the X-Files?

In 1955, Bill Randa (Anders Holm) and Dr. Miura met Dr. Suzuki at Hateruma Island, Japan (Suzuki introduced it as Monster Island). Suzuki is testing a device that attracts Titans.

In 2015, Lee’s team is now in the Algerian Desert. That trip is a serious commitment, so finding it believable that any of these characters have doubts about continuing is a little far-fetched. Yes, I said far-fetched regarding characters in a Godzilla show. That’s how random these character motivations are.

Once they arrive at the spot on Hiroshi Randa’s map, they find Hiroshi Randa! Cate and Kentaro’s father is alive, and they can finally see him. He’s far off in a field below, waving for them to get away, which is, of course, misinterpreted. That is until Godzilla emerges from the rocks of a nearby mountain. In fact, Godzilla is the mountain.

Suzuki’s contraption attracted Godzilla in 1955, while Hiroshi’s smaller version of the same contraption attracted Godzilla in 2015. These images make the entire show worth the excruciating wait. Now, as Godzilla is on the move in both eras, we have some possible real action and destruction to look forward to.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6 also touches on the mystery of May. She reveals a few things about her past and how Monarch has been tracking them. She’s been sharing their location with Monarch since the beginning. It’s not a great big surprise, and it’s certainly now the hook for next week that Godzilla was walking off toward civilization.
