Sean Whalen may be best known for his breakout role as Roach in Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs (1991). However, his decades-long career in the industry has birthed numerous quirky and memorable characters in film and television, like Waterworld (1995), Twister (1996), Charlie’s Angels (2000), and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Whalen is not a traditional leading man, so being a supporting actor has helped put his name on the map. While his career has been long and respected, the actor has taken things a few steps further by co-writing and directing the film Crust (2024). Surrounding himself with a cast full of friends, he’s crafted a heartfelt film that’s original, funny, campy, and quirky, much like the cast.
Synopsis: Vegas Winters (Whalen), a depressed, washed-up child actor, fled Tinseltown and now owns and lives in a rundown laundromat. He finds lost socks in the machines and uses them to soak up all his bodily fluids. One night, he is bullied and cries a tear that turns the pile into a loving sock monster named Crust.
The film wouldn’t have worked as well as it did (read my review here) without his co-star, Rebekah Kennedy. An actress who has been in the business since 2007, she has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including Criminal Minds, Law and Order: SVU, Station 19, and many others.

Kennedy’s casting in Crust has allowed her to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight with a beautiful portrayal of a woman who appears to have it all together but deals with her own struggles.
I recently had the opportunity to talk with Sean Whalen and Rebekah Kennedy about Crust. We discussed their characters and, of course, Whalen’s incomparable dancing skills. The film is now available on VOD with a physical release on DVD and Blu-ray on December 10, 2024.
