This article contains spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6
In the mad, deranged, upside-down world of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), it seems he has found a rare sweet spot in which to exist. He’s made a breakthrough with his son Harrison (Jack Alcott), he lives below a great landlord in Blessing Karma (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine), taken some of the heat off Harrison in terms of the police investigation, and has a new group of killers in which he can slowly kill one by one. However, nothing good ever lasts for Dexter, and soon he finds himself hip deep in death, both planned and unplanned, and a surprise revelation that throws his plans into confusion.
Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6, “Cats & Mouse,” opens with Dexter’s landlord, Blessing, informing him that his mother had passed away in the night. He then invites him to a wake at the house. Awkward moments later, Dexter is on the phone with Harrison, who comes to his rescue with proper clothing to wear to the service (no, Dexter, a black hoodie doesn’t count as proper attire to wear). It is quite a wake, reminiscent of a celebration of life, and took Dexter off guard. The whole event was an awkward experience for him as he struggled to sort out the new emotions and thoughts he was experiencing.

Meanwhile, Detectives Wallace (Kadia Saraf) and Oliva (Dominic Fumusa), while interviewing Mia’s (Krysten Ritter) last surviving target, stumble upon a clue that might prove she did not kill Ryan Foster, despite the presence of his watch in her apartment. A chat with Angel (David Zayas), still hunting Dexter and now Harrison, gets him invited to the detectives’ chat with Mia while she is in custody. Angel intends to show her a picture of Dexter and see if she recognizes him, confirming that something more is going on here.

To calm his serial killer guests down, Prater (Peter Dinklage) invites the remaining killers to an impromptu meeting and meal, allowing Gareth (David Dastmalchian), Al (Eric Stonestreet), and Dexter to voice their concerns about what should be done about Mia and the missing Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris). Although there is less concern about Lowell, there is more concern about Mia letting the cops know about this get-together and who they all were. Prater reiterates that things will soon be back to normal, and with some extra cash in everyone’s pocket, they are, for now, respectful of the man and his word.
It is curious to see Prater nervous and caught off guard this episode, a sign that perhaps he does not have the kind of control he lets on. And control is the key here, in terms of his obsession and life in general. However, he is a man of his word, and with Charley (Uma Thurman) bribing a prison guard, Mia is soon found dead in her cell, death by apparent suicide, much to the chagrin of Wallace, Oliva, and most of all Angel, who were too late to get their questions answered. It seems that Prater does not like loose ends, regardless of promises, and it should prove interesting moving forward.

Speaking of moving forward, Dexter begins the hunt for his next victim, that being Gareth, and follows him around, as a hunter should, tracking his patterns and movements. However, upon returning home, he is startled to discover Gareth waiting for him, and so begins an interesting conversation. Dastmalchian gives Gareth the perfect deadpan delivery yet makes his ego and self-importance easily understood, adding more fuel to Dexter’s distaste for the man. Spiking his drink, he incapacitates him, ties him up, and before he has a chance to say anything else, finishes him off. I’m pretty sure it satisfied both his Dark Passenger and his need for some peace and quiet.

However, this was quickly followed by one of those situations in Dexter where you have to nod your head and take it all with a grain of salt. A knock on his door made Dexter quickly stuff the body in the tub, which was followed by a surprise visit from his landlord. He noticed something wrong with the shower curtain and, of course, kept chatting while the body was just on the other side, until finally he left. These “he almost got caught” scenes are a little old at this point, and this one just seemed stuffed in there for the sake of conversation and supposed tension.
Dexter and Harrison continue to bond over father/son things and the bond of darkness that lies inside both of them. While Dexter remains adamant that Harrison is not like him, there can be no denying the impulse to kill is still there, as we get to see in a scene with Elsa’s (Emilia Suarez) sleazy landlord. The moment before the wake, where Dexter, Harrison, and Harry all stood before a mirror, was almost human, until you remember just what kind of people you are dealing with. Dexter’s new bond with Harrison might work, but is it enough to turn him away from killing again?

Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6 wraps with Dexter/Red getting a call and asking him to bring his tools. It’s a surprise, and who is Dexter to refuse his new benefactor and the targets he has provided him? They are off on a helicopter ride somewhere, and while Al has joined them. You can almost see Dexter smirking as he knows Gareth will be a no-show. However, a car pulls up, and to his utter disbelief, Gareth walks towards the helicopter, jumps in, and they are off. Dexter missed it, missed that there are twin Gemini killers, and now he is left wondering what, if anything, this Gareth knows.
As far as the overall story goes, “Cats & Mouse” did a solid job of moving the plot lines along and giving us a nice little twist at the same time. Plots are developing and evolving, and there is good pacing in terms of the big picture. The episode on its own was a little strange at times, seemed a little disjointed, and some parts just didn’t flow together as well as other episodes.
That being said, the show continues to do what it does best and give us just enough new material to keep things fresh and interesting, without giving too much away.
Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6 is now available for streaming and on demand for Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan. The remaining episodes will premiere weekly, every Friday.
