Venom in Spider-Man: The Animated Series
Marvel Entertainment

After Tom Hardy played Eddie Brock in a series of live-action Venom films, the fan-favorite Marvel character will next get animated.

Per THR, Sony has started development on an animated Venom film. This marks the first animated feature for Venom. Final Destination: Bloodlines helmers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have also been tapped to direct the new film. It’s expected that Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach will serve as producers on the new project following their work on the live-action installments.

Hardy is also said to be involved with the animated Venom. However, the level of his involvement is not currently known, as it’s noted he’ll simply be included in “some capacity.” This may or may not mean that Hardy will voice the animated version of Eddie Brock. Hardy could potentially just be on board as a producer.

Sony Pictures Animation has opened a writers room to craft the story, though no screenwriters have yet signed on. It could be speculated that the movie will be connected to the live-action films, though with no clear plot locked down just yet, it seems just as likely at this point that the animated movie will mark a fresh new start with an original story.

In any case, the film’s release is likely several years away. Animation takes a very long time to develop, and as a script still has yet to be written, the new project is merely entering its very early stages of development.

A release date has not yet been announced for the animated Venom movie.
