There’s an old saying; if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Back in the 1990’s, SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog was a juggernaut in the competitive world of video gaming. You were either a fan of Mario or a fan of Sonic. You simply had to choose sides.
Today, though, it’s a very different story. Mario and Nintendo has continued to evolve and grown into a behemoth that will likely never be knocked from the top spot. Meanwhile, Sonic has become little more than a footnote in the history of console gaming, with horrible titles like Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Unleashed.
Well, all that may be about to change with the upcoming release of Sonic Mania from SEGA, a throwback to the glory days of side scrolling, fast as f**k, coin collecting we all knew and loved. There’s no silly gimmicks, no pointless reinventing of the wheel – just good old fashioned Sonic fun.
Sonic Mania is an essential addition to any retro gaming collection. It’s the speedy blue hedgehog you remember from the days of your Genesis. And those of you who are less au fait with Sonic, Tails and co., it’s a nice little starting point.
Sonic Mania will retail at a nice, cheap price of $19.99 (UK price TBC), and will be released on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
