Big news has been revealed for Payday fans. It’s just been announced that VICE Studios (Gangs of London) is partnering up with Starbreeze Entertainment to bring Payday to other mediums, securing the film and TV rights for the franchise. The announcement was made by VICE Studios President Amy Powell and Starbreeze Entertainment CEO Adolf Kristjansson.
“Payday has a world that is bigger than the game itself,” Powell said in a statement. “There’s mythology behind the masks and a crew of characters with real history that is incredibly exciting to explore. Partnering with Starbreeze Entertainment, we’re excited to build that universe and see how far it can go on screen.”
Kristjansson added, “Our goal is to grow Payday from a game into a full entertainment platform, owning the heisting genre. Payday is the cornerstone franchise for Starbreeze, and we’re highly selective about partners who can expand its universe beyond games. VICE Studios is the perfect partner for this project, combining creative ambition with the production capability that feels authentic to Payday.”

The Payday franchise debuted in 2011, and has since reached over 50 million players worldwide. Exploring cinematic heists with high-octane action, the games have players controlling professional bank robbers to plan and carry out major heists. They are best enjoyed with co-op gameplay, featuring four players working together with different playstyles.
There’s no word yet on when the film and TV adaptations will be released.
